Best practices for schools are:
- Link program participation to classroom goals.
- Encourage students to engage in meaningful service and visible outcomes.
- Give students a strong voice in the planning, implementing and evaluating of their own program.
- Prompt students to reflect on their participation before, during and after the experience.
- Ensure that service-learning partnerships are collaborative, mutually beneficial and address community needs.
- Build the program to promote understanding of diversity and mutual respect among all participants.
- An ongoing process: Monitor progress toward meeting specified goals, and use results for improvement and sustainability.
- Include sufficient duration and intensity to address community needs and meet specified outcomes.
