Best practices for schools are:

  1. Link program participation to classroom goals.
  2. Encourage students to engage in meaningful service and visible outcomes.
  3. Give students a strong voice in the planning, implementing and evaluating of their own program.
  4. Prompt students to reflect on their participation before, during and after the experience.
  5. Ensure that service-learning partnerships are collaborative, mutually beneficial and address community needs.
  6. Build the program to promote understanding of diversity and mutual respect among all participants.
  7. An ongoing process: Monitor progress toward meeting specified goals, and use results for improvement and sustainability.
  8. Include sufficient duration and intensity to address community needs and meet specified outcomes.
