The center of technology activity in academia has moved from the computer center to the faculty, and, now, after more than 30 years since the microcomputer took technology outside the computer center, it is moving to the students themselves.

The University of Florida’s Center for Leadership and Service has announced a partnership with SweatMonkey, a Web-based resource created by a UF sophomore to engage students in community service.

Callahan Fore is an 18 year old freshman at the University of Florida. He is also a social entrepreneur. When Cal was 15 his high school required him to do community service hours. While Cal and his classmates were eager to make a difference and were not afraid of hard work, they had no idea where to begin. Cal began to wonder if there was some way to provide an online network to share community service opportunities.

Sweat Monkey Works for Volunteers

Online job hunters have their Monster, and Polk County students in need of volunteer work now have a Sweat Monkey. Sweatmonkey.com, the Internet creation of a 16-year-old Lakeland resident, will be introduced Thursday during an information session at Florida Southern College.

Callahan Fore was barely old enough to drive when he became an entrepreneur three years ago. Then a 16-year-old junior at All Saints' Academy in Winter Haven, Fore spearheaded the development of SweatMonkey.org, a non-profit Internet operation that connects youths with local volunteer jobs.
